UK-Canada Globalink Doctoral Exchange Scheme
The UK-Canada Globalink Doctoral Exchange Scheme is just one outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by UKRI and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) last year to partner on collaborative, jointly-funded research and innovation programmes. Supported by UKRI and Mitacs, up to 200 UK doctoral candidates will have the opportunity to develop into global citizens with international competencies, during 12-week research placements in Canadian universities; a similar number of Canadian students will visit UK universities. The scheme supports the UK Government’s target of 2.4% GDP spend in R&D by 2027, helping the UK make the most of its world-class research, supporting its researchers to stay at the cutting edge, forge international collaborations, and encourage global talent to work in the UK.
The scheme will be open to UKRI-funded and Canadian doctoral students working in all areas. For UKRI students, placements will be available at universities across Canada in a variety of academic disciplines from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.
The call for applications from UKRI students wanting to undertake a placement in Canada is scheduled to open in autumn 2019 with the first placements taking place from April 2020 after a competitive application process. The scheme will support travel, living and research costs for the students in their chosen field of study.
Further information and details of how to apply will be made available from September 2019 but I wanted to make you aware of this opportunity as soon possible so you are able to highlight it to your students and enable them to start planning for the opportunity should they wish to do so (students and supervisors are free to contact Canadian researchers ahead of the call launch to start developing placements). I also wanted to make you aware that you may be contacted by Canadian students keen to undertake placements within your DTP/CDT. There is no obligation for you to host students but we wanted to make you aware of this opportunity as soon as possible.
