Discovery of major deep-sea sponge bed ecosystem off Scotland
Over 100 miles to the North-West of the outer Hebrides, way out into the Atlantic and deep in the Rockall Trough, there is a massive extinct volcano that rises 1,900 m from the seabed. This single seamount known as Rosemary Bank was designated a new Marine Protected Area in 2014.
In September 2014 a new sponge bed ecosystem has been discovered there between 1,200-1,500 m depth.
