Research

Joint Research Themes

The scientific activity to support MASTS is conducted by nine Joint Research Themes (JRTs):

These JRTs aim to provide the research
support to address major cross cutting issues
involving sustainable management and exploitation of the
marine environment including:

  • Renewable energy
  • Coastal development
  • Exploitation of bioresources
  • Marine spatial management
  • Conservation of living resources
  • Predicting the effects of climate change

Acknowledging MASTS Support

It is important that all MASTS support is properly acknowledged and the following form of words should be used.

Non-direct financial support (in kind support, shared equipment, cooperative links etc): "The authors acknowledge the support of the MASTS pooling initiative (The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland) in the completion of this study. MASTS is funded by the Scottish Funding Council (grant reference HR09011) and contributing institutions".

Direct financial support (MASTS staff or students involved, travel funds and other direct support): "This work received funding from the MASTS pooling initiative (The Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland) and their support is gratefully acknowledged. MASTS is funded by the Scottish Funding Council (grant reference HR09011) and contributing institutions".

MASTS PROJECTS

Research proposals and projects that engage the broad range of MASTS institutions and expertise are evolving. The Directorate cascades funding opportunities and calls for proposals to the community through the Executive and the Science Board and has assisted in the development of a number of MASTS consortium bids. Collaborative bids coordinated by MASTS will ensure future sustainability and meet the demands of our stakeholders. Please respond to calls from the Directorate if you are interested in working with the MASTS team.

The Directorate should be informed if you are submitting or conducting a MASTS project. This is important in terms of co-ordination and MASTS' financial accounting to the Scottish Funding Council.

To be badged as "MASTS" the proposed project or initiative should meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Directly involves at least one named MASTS appointee
  • Directly involves at least two MASTS Member organisations
  • Directly involves Government/Regulators/Industry if only one MASTS organisation is to be involved
  • Be wholly or partly funded by MASTS in cash or in kind (possible amounts/ proportions to be specified)
  • The appropriate JRT(s) has been fully consulted and endorses the proposal/initiative to the Directorate/Executive
  • The MASTS Directorate approves or requests that the Executive approves the proposed project or initiative
