OECD Forum ‘Greening the Ocean Economy’

On 21 and 22 November 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) organised a Forum on ‘Green Growth and Sustainable Development’ (GGSD) at OECD headquarters in Paris, France. The European Marine Board Secretariat participated in the Forum, which was part of the OECD Ocean Economy Week. One of the Forum discussions concentrated on challenges and solutions related to tackling the amount of plastic waste in the marine environment. A blog post was published in advance of the Forum to underscore how marine debris accumulates in the oceans and forms “giant garbage patches” around the world, contributing to significant economic, ecological and social costs. The blog highlights the urgency of ensuring the sustainable use of the ocean and marine resources through progress on SDG 14 (life below water), including SDG target 14.1 on the prevention and reduction of marine pollution by 2025.
