CREW
Feedback to Applicants and FAQs

All of the projects outlined in the call for proposals will be led by a Principle Investigator from the James Hutton Institute.

CREW

Q - Is the expectation that joint JHI-HEI proposals are submitted or are separate proposals expected from HEIs (but with strong stated links with JHI proposals?).

A - The principle behind the funding on offer is that the JHI has defined the projects that are to be taken forward in liaison with Scottish Government. The HEI components of the proposed projects represent areas that JHI believe HEIs can add value to the work they will be undertaking as defined in the project information provided. The HEIs will only be required to address the areas specified as being HEI within the project description provided.

Q – Can non-HEI involvement be included in the proposal?

A - The current position is that CREW can fund Scottish HEIs only. One approach may be to include the non-HEI as an optional extra in the bid. It will then be a decision for Scottish Government to take as to whether to except the non-HEI involvement.

Q - Would the research team be able to freely publish any results in journals or would this be restricted?

A - Section 14 of the Standard CREW contract deals with publication. There is a general prescription in favour of publication of results, subject to the conditions of the contract. JHI and ultimately the relevant Scottish Government Policy division would have to have sight of the draft publication within a specified period of its proposed publication and be at liberty to comment upon it. If there is any IP in the proposed publication, it is the responsibility of the contractor to alert USTAN in the first instance before anything is published and it is then ultimately up to Scottish Government if they wish to withhold this information to protect any IP rights.

PROJECT 1: Critically review methodologies to identify sources and pathways for urban diffuse pollution and identify measures/treatments with multiple benefit.

Q - Should each of the three stages should be included in the proposal?

A - YES

Q - Are the stages to be completed concurrently or in series?

A - Stage 1 should be delivered within 3 months of the start of the project and stage 2 and 3 at the end of the project. Work can be carried out on all stages concurrently or as the contractor sees fit.

PROJECT 2: Review the impacts/risks of the water related known unknowns, such nano-materials; micro-plastics; priority hazardous substances and Review and evaluate monitoring methodologies to identify the sources and impacts of water related known unknowns.

Q – Should the HEI focus on the nanoparticles and micro-plastics issue and the JHI will cover other topics?

A - Input is welcomed on all areas, but it is anticipated that the HEI partner will focus on nanoparticles and micro-plastics, with JHI covering the other two areas and leading the project.

Q - Can we have more information regarding the type and scope of report that is expected; will the results be publishable by us and JHI as review paper(s)?

A - A concise research report for each contaminant will be required. Discussion within the project team and policy colleagues will determine how an overall report is best structured. HEI partners will have input to this discussion at the start of the project. Results will be published by CREW.

Q - Do you have any idea how many projects per topic will be funded?

A -We anticipate 1 funded project per topic.

PROJECT 3: Economic and behavioural incentives available to rural and urban communities (and land managers?), to help manage water quality and quantity and water usage.

Q – Is it expected that the costing for any tender includes the cost of mounting the workshop (e.g. refreshments, rooms booking, travel costs of participants). Also would CREW Administration help  in organising the workshop?

A – It is likely that the workshop would be held in Victoria Quay. No costing for room booking and refreshments need be included in the tender. Travel costs should be included. The Scottish Government contact and JHI partner would help with organising the workshop
