The Physical Oceanography Joint Research Theme within MASTS will promote excellence in Physical Oceanography & related marine research in Scotland under the framework of the MASTS marine pooling bid. The goal of the Physical Oceanography JRT is to create an internationally renowned Scottish research grouping studying mixing and exchange processes in the sea at temperate latitudes.
The success of this grouping will be measured by its scientific output contributing to four operational goals, achieved both through MASTS and with future collaborations outside MASTS:
1. Shelf-wide marine environment model forecasting 2. Shelf and coastal water climatic impact prediction 3. Sea loch, estuarine and coastal water quality assessment tools 4. Connectivity indices between semi-enclosed coastal systems.
These wider goals will be achieved through greater coordination of existing resources, via joint projects and joint MASTS PhD student supervision, by sharing access to infrastructure facilities, and through new targeted crossinstitutional MASTS posts and facilities.
